6 oz SAE

Anyone here ever seen a 6oz SAE? My Dad picked up a few a couple of years ago from APMEX. I traded for one of his just because it gives me a woody:36_3_12:

Sorry if the pictures are not up to the Tom D standards:ok: Bx3

I have one sort of like that. I suspect mine has a nice juicy copper center, however.

Oh well, at least the outside is certainly silver... I like it quite a bit anyway.

Yes, these are very common at auctions around here. Also make sure you read the back carefully. Some say troy pound (12 ounces) and some just say pound (16 ounces)

I have seen them in 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 ounce sizes

I had no idea that they made them in so many different weights. I would imagine that these are probably minted in somewhat limited numbers aren't they? Does anyone know if they mint them every year? Thanks!

These aren't made by the US Mint - I bought one at my local shop and the guy told me that the company making them got into trouble for using the design and had to stop.

I notice it has no face value. I was thinking that was the kicker for getting the feds on your butt. I could see copying the design irking them too.

I highly doubt that they made a limited number. Normally these kind of thing they make as many as they can, as long as people keep buying them

Damn, so it sounds like authenticity (6oz of fine AG) could be in question.

Well, yeah... but the way I see it it's not that big of a deal. It'ss a cool piece even if it is just silver clad. It is important to know what it is just for peace of mind though...

Anyhoo... here's what I have... can't remember what it weighed out at. If it's important to you I will have it weighed again...

I believe they are made by the Washington Mint...same company that makes the 4oz $100 bill bars. They are all over eBay.

And don't feel bad, nobodies pictures are even close to Tom D standards :36_1_32v:

These replicas also come in 2oz. sizes. They're not very pretty, but all I've seen were really silver.

Did they really get in trouble for minting these? The image looks different than the SAEs, and there's no dollar denomination on them.

I bought a 1/2 troy pound one at my local shop. The guy had a few on hand - they only said '1/2 pound' on them so we weighed them. Some were troy and some were avoirdupois - you really need to make sure of the weight prior to purchasing these things.

My dumb a** just bought 10 of these at 8oz's each....I was just messing around and submitted a best offer and the guy took it :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I've not made that mistake but I have made a couple and there is one thing about silly mistakes. You don't repeat them and they teach you to slow down and really think about what you're buying, why you're buying it and what it means to pay for it. Learn from your mistakes and don't let it get you down.

The ones my Dad picked up were from APMEX and the packaging states .999 fine silver. I guess I have some more investigating to do. Thanks for all the replies.

I have 3 of the 6 ouncers and 3 of the 8 ouncers. I got all of mine from APMEX. I believe them to be real .999 fine silver because my best friend ordered some after seeing mine and one of his had a drilled place about halfway through. It was silver inside.

I wouldn't touch these coins with a 10 foot pole. Usually seen one or two at a coin show.

I was expecting a counteroffer...I should have gone lower :banghead:

Re: 6 oz SAE

As I've stated before, I have seen one that was drilled halfway through. There was no copper or lead in it. It was silver as far as the drilled spot went. I also don't think that APMEX would buy and sell them if they were widely suspected to be anything other than .999 fine silver.

I would trust Apmex not to risk their reputation. However I got mine from a local shop. The guy is fairly trustworthy, but no one is a saint.

So I just got these beauties in a few minutes ago. 10 8oz silver eagles, 1986-1995.

I put a sweet camel cigarettes silver piece and a quarter there for comparison.

they look sweet, how did they compare to buying 4 rolls of SAE's?

believe it or not much cheaper! I don't know where you can find a roll for $300 (15/oz) but if you could...i still would have got these cheaper. I picked them up for $14.5/oz or $1160 for all 80ozs out the door.

If i were to pick up 4 rolls at APMEX it would cost me $1305 + S&H.

I think I got a good deal, plus I've seen these things go on eBay for upwards of $150 so I can always piece out the set and take a profit which I may have to do as I really can't fit these in my safe :(

...why wont the Au/Ag ratio drop ? :hissyfit_m:
